I just finished an original cover song I made from scratch. The song is "Titanium" by David Guetta and I also filmed a video to go with the song which I'll upload on YouTube at some point. All BGM and vocals in the video were made by me, and it was a good chance to gain some experience in the areas of drums, bass, guitar, and vocal recording, programing, mixing, and mastering.
I definitely leveled up in the areas of reverb, EQ, and delay.
I came up with the idea of laying the guitar arpeggio with some bells... it ended up having a nice holiday feel to the song and I think it complements the acoustic tone well.
During the mastering process, I discovered that some of the bells in the chorus were buried in the mix. Not wanting to leave the mastering project, I just put the spectrometer on the bells and found the fundamental's frequency and automated in an EQ boost which brought it out of the mix unbelievably well. Also worked in some parallel compression on the whole track in addition to many many other things: synthetic reverb and IR reverb... the synthetic really helped me to understand the reverb parameters well... anyway those are just a few of the things I can remember off the top of my head.
Looking to try an EDM track now. It's still a brave new world for me, but I'm sure I'll figure it out!
